In a lab experiment his team succeeded extinguishing a photon to then let this light particle emerge again in the same moment a few metres away.

The article about the worldwide first quantum teleportation had hardly appeared in the science magazine "Nature", CNN also already called – then the media hype broke out, which lasts until today.

Until this publication only initiated people were interested in this difficult to understand experiment of the quantum physicists. Only with Zeilinger’s teleportation also to the general public it is any good. Because with it a science fiction dream seemed to become true: the beaming. At least in principle the lab experiment shows it is really possible how Captain Kirk of the space craft Enterprise covers gigantic distances like an imp.

The Vienna researchers utilized an extremely strange effect of the micro world: When two particles, for example two photons, come into contact, it can happen that they remain lastingly in contact with each other. Whatever happens with one particle from now on – it seems to influence the other directly in an almost telepathic way.

After its particle marriage such photons behave as it were like marked dices: When one falls on the six then also the other shows automatically this score. This connection, called entanglement in physicist jargon, works over any distance – even then when the two partners are light years away from each other.

For Albert Einstein this radical consequence of quantum theory was eerie; he doubted that the ghostly effect in the distance really exists. But in the past years physicists have shown with again and again new lab experiences that invisible wires are stretched over some particles.

Zeillinger uses such connected photons in his beam experiments to transport a third photon straight through space. The one photon then feels the to be transported passenger particle all over and extinguishes it as a result – whereupon the passenger particle resurrects at the same moment in the other photon.

"The crazy thing is that between the entangled photons no information is exchanged at all", says Zeilinger. "Also I cannot really imagine what happens with this process beyond time and space."
